This training will be open to a variety of stakeholders and will focus on the background of the statute and systemic considerations in the implementation of the statute. A review of the statute, relevant case law, and trends in the applicaiton of the statute will be discussed. A panel, including a District Attorney and a Defense Attorney, will discuss the role of waiver evaluations in their respective roles. Treatment and intervention options with Oregon Youth Authority and the Department of Corrections will be discussed. This joint training is intended for legal and mental health professionals to explore the history and background of Senate Bill 1008 which established the juvenile waiver process for youth charged with serious offenses in Oregon. The interdisciplinary panel of presenters will review statute, case law, and judicial trends since SB 1008 passed in 2019.

Describe the SB 1008 prongs and how this law shifted how Oregon Courts proceed with juveniles facing serious charges.
Analyze how different stakeholders view and utilize waiver evaluations in the legal process.
Identify differences in treatment and intervention options between OYA and DOC settings.
Identify resources and services available within OYA and DOC concerning race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, and faith/spirituality/religion.
